10:08 pm - Election 08
I know I'd be living under a rock... (actually not UNDER a rock, but maybe some desert island.. if I was under a rock I'm sure I'd still hear it) about Barack Obama.  I think it's a fabulous thing, and I cried just a little.  I'm excited for him to become president, and I'm glad that we were able to pull it off.  I was scared that we'd have another election of 2000 where the popular vote really won, but the electoral votes dominated.

I think it's also great that he's trying to get prepared for it.  He's stepping right up.  I was kind of laughing yesterday when they showed Pennsylvania Avenue with people... and I said, "there they are... they're helping Bush move out."  Seriously, the only reason that Inaugeration Day is in January was because of the amount of time it took for votes to be counted way back in the day.  Barack Obama's first day as president could've been today, and with this economic crisis, it should've been.  What is Bush really doing ?

I'm also really psyched cuz the Democrats are dominating Congress.  It's a great thing, but at the same time it seems like it's becoming TOO factionalized.  Although the last 8 years have been dominated by the Republicans, and the entire country has paid for all the damage that their decisions have brought upon us, I'm similarly afraid that the Democrats would do the same thing.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a full-fledged Democrat, but it makes me worry about the state of our political system.

Although, I'm hoping that the middle class will be brought up once again... It makes sense that the middle and working class dominate policy.  The part of the capitalist system that sucks is that it seems so ruthless, and so arbitrary that people  have no regard for the wealth of the whole, but rather for the wealth of the individual and one's own advancement.  I hope that this type of selfishness goes away, and that for once the middle and working class will be able to have hope for their futures, and know that the perpetual "glass ceiling" no longer exists.

Kids on TV from the South Bronx are so proud to be who they are.  They have such high hopes now because of what Barack Obama has achieved and how he's achieved it.  They see themselves in him and his success is representative of their potential success.

So psyched! :)

Bedtime.... because I haven't slept in three days.

6:34 pm - Racism in the 21st Century
While at Bard College, part of our coursework is in Identity and Culture, and we've been reading about racism in schools as well as in the community and how a identity is developed in adolescents. We had this class yesterday morning, and since I've studied racism and the structural/institutional aspects of it for years, I'm super interested and knowledgeable about it.

Well, Chris and I went to Wal-Mart after class yesterday, and shopped for stuff we needed: food, paper, drinks, etc etc, and we paid. The trip was a success, and as we paid and were getting ready to walk out, I see that there's a bit of a back-up at the exit because they're checking receipts. So, Chris and I find our receipts since we haphazardly tossed them into our bags and wait in the queue until we get to the lady. The woman waved us by.

We walked by her, and immediately turned to one another and knew exactly what had just happened.

The people that they had been checking were Black. And Chris and the other couple that she waved by were White. We ran into the guy who was getting checked as we walked out because I think that he knew it too. He was checking to see if anyone else was getting stopped, and of course he knew at that moment.

We were so upset after leaving Wal-Mart that we decided to call Wal-Mart and complain. This blatant racism was SO uncalled for. We've also vowed not to go back to Wal-Mart ever again in protest. We're also spreading the word throughout the dorm in hopes that it makes a few more people aware of what happened.

We were also so upset that I decided to stop by my professors office on the off chance that he was there on a Friday afternoon, but he wasn't. I just felt like I had to talk to a "higher power" about it, and I may discuss it with him next week.

10:04 am - Being at Bard College...
Being at Bard College has made me feel... different.  I don't know why, and I can't explain it, but something about this place is mesmerizing.  I've made friends quickly, and was very suddenly thrown into class where I think I enjoy learning more and more.  I've already read two books and a multitude of excerpts and short chapters.  Although I hated leaving my job and home again, I feel like I've sort of found a new home.  I miss being away from my friends and family, but sometimes I don't even want to go home.

The difference between Bard and Albany is that I don't feel this compulsion to go home every chance I get.  I don't know what makes it different, if it's the people or if it's the fact that this is finally a "vacation" for me from working, school, and friends all around.  I lost significant weight over the last few months BECAUSE of the stress that all three of those created for me.

In any case, I have a meeting with a professor today to go over some research topics.  More later. :)

3:25 pm - Approaching Graduation.. quickly!
I completely forgot that graduation was this weekend up til about a week ago.  I know most people have countdowns with their graduations, but until today I had no idea what I was doing.  I knew I was giving a speech, and I wrote it already and I have my outfit planned (Thanks to Sylvia, Ruben and Pam who bought it for me), but otherwise, I completely forgot.  It all feels so surreal.  Like something you thought about for so long, but never thought would come.

I'm feeling numb.. I know I'm going to Bard in a few weeks, and I just can't believe it.  I went to the history department because I had some things to drop off and pick up, and then I asked about graduation and Scott, the sweetest man in the world gave me the lowdown on graduation as well as a peek at the program.

In the program, that's where I found out that I won two awards; one called the Crippen prize, awarded to an outstanding graduating senior in American history, and the Catharine Newbold Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding senior who will use their history degree in their future profession.  I couldn't believe it.  I don't have stage fright or anything, but the fact that it's all approaching so quickly and then Bard will approach faster than I know it, I look back on the last three years and think what have I done?

I didn't think I merited the awards because I thought that other people did better than me, but little did I know I actually had the highest cumulative average in the entire department.  I always thought that people did better than me, but I worked hard because I was so anal about perfect scores and rounded numbers; none of that + or - stuff, I just wanted an A. LOL

Well, as I pack up my stuff, I can say goodbye to this place, and say hello to Bard.  I realize now how much more involved I should've been, although I think I did quite a bit this year.

10:32 am - Internet Outage
I have been without Internet until this time since yesterday at work.  It's horrible.  I forgot how it was like to live without Internet.  What did people do?  I mean, it was actually okay because last night when our Internet was down (and coincidently my cousin who lives in the basement, her wireless Internet wasn't working either), so we ended up sharing funny stories which made me laugh too much and eventually went to bed around 11ish.  It was pretty nice that we did that.  But what else did people do without Internet?

This morning I got up and was like, "I wonder when the library opens," and then my cousin goes, "go google it," then we're like, "waiiitttt we can't." :(

So alas, I have resulted to coming to the PUBLIC library to use their internet.  And they don't allow chatting applications, so I'm really out of touch with the world. :(

8:40 pm - Is that how to get famous in America?
I've been following the Governor Spitzer Sex Scandal, and I think that this fuckin' whore who apparently serviced the infamous Client No. 9 is famous now. I mean okay, you're a singer, but what kind of pride do you have in yourself to have to service men for a living to get by. Obviously she wasn't smart enough to get a real job and fight hard. I think it's complete bullshit about her life. Her house is a freakin' mansion over in New Jersey, but instead she decided to abuse drugs, be broke and homeless and then become a freakin' prostitute.

First, I find it appalling that she is not getting charged with prostitution. I find it appalling that today Z100, the biggest radio station in New York City is playing her song, and it was ranked the #1 most requested song. If this is the reason that she gets famous, it is a bad sign to society because then it convinces children that the only way to get famous is to sleep with the right people (and then get caught), or to use sex appeal to get become famous. What kind of bullshit is this to teach our children? When good things happen, and people are doing good things for the world, why aren't they famous? Why do we take these over-sexed, and over-exposed people and put them on the covers of our magazines, newspapers, CD covers, and make them the first story on the eleven o'clock news when innocent people are dying everyday in Iraq, Africa and other Third World countries. All the money and attention go to these worthless pieces of shit who are using one man's vice and demise to launch her own career.

Secondly, her song sucks. She's practically screeching. If that song is going to make the radio waves and actually get on the charts, I will have lost all hope in society.

And I haven't made icons in like 8 months, so I made 10 (to make em even). ;)

5:11 pm - Day from HELL.
Well not REALLY the day from hell, but it was pretty aggravating. I didn't go to work today like I was supposed to, and my boss called to make sure everything was okay.  That was super sweet of him. :)  But then I got on the road to come home in the now-falling snow, and it's not so bad in the beginning but as I get down to the Saugerties-Kingston area, it COMES DOWN.  It's horrible.  Not as bad as two weeks ago, but it's pretty slow.  After I pass the Harriman exit, I almost got hit by a jackass who has a HUGE truck with a trailer.  First of all, in New York state if you have a trailer, you can't be in the left lane.  I'm in the left lane, and this guy from the right lane of a three-lane highway and practically side-swipes me.  If it weren't for my calm nerves and fast reflexes, that guy would've seriously hit me.  I honked the horn and the guy STILL KEPT GOING.  I knew he was an out of state driver because after he passed me, I checked for his front license plate in case he tried it again and he didn't have one.  Most states outside of New York don't require cars to have their license plate on the front and back.  I was SUPER PISSED OFF.

Then I get home, and the reason I came home early was not only for the weather, but to go to Queens College to order my transcripts for Graduate school.  First of all, they don't have online ordering or FAXING which I think makes them pretty ancient.  I go there, and I forgot the form that they have to attach for the school.  So I ask if I can fax it to save myself a trip.  They said NO.  So, I got the form and twenty minutes later, when I'm soaking wet from the rain, this lady is a total bitch to me and says that I have to go to the bursar to pay for it, which I knew was a lie since I had done it before and paid there at the counter. I was like, "I've always paid here," and then she bothers to ask if I was paying by cash.  Why did she assume I was paying in cash?  People who work with other people need to anticipate these kinds of things.  Did I look like someone who couldn't pay by check?  That fucking bitch.  And then she tells me that I filled out the form wrong, which is a horrible and illogical form which lacks directions.  So I have to fill it out for the third time that same day. So by the time I left there, I was fed up with Queens College and thanked GOD that I was done with them and had transferred.

Seriously, that lady needed some serious customer service training.  If she continued to give me a hard time, I would've asked for a supervisor, and gotten her name and number and then made them process my form the same day because of the whole inconvenience. FUCKING BITCH.

And now I'm home. Dry.  And watching Monk.  And about to make empanadas.

7:22 pm - Return of the X-Files!
I was SO psyched for this!

excerpted:

X-Files
July 25

The bait: Mulder and Scully.
X-fIles brings back David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as a believer-and-skeptic team, a couple that Carter says still resonates. "When we first got on set and I saw them together, I got chills," he says. "They've always had a chemistry that's rare in television. It was like having the familiy back together."

Who is down for this? :)

10:45 pm - Giddyup for the last semester!
Wahoo! I began my last semester at the University at Albany today with a nice little 6 hour block of classes and after a one hour class tomorrow, I'm done for the whole week.

It was long, and expensive, so it'll be over before I know it. :)

I'm also on a bit of a Monk kick.  I *LOVE* Jason Gray-Stanford.  So much that I made this..

11:27 pm - War against the transit system
I'm over the Teach for America rejection.  They can kiss my Asian ass.

I'm actually more mad at the MTA here.  On my line, they've removed all Express service and on the weekends no service halfway of the line.  It's ridiculous, and it will only get more ridiculous in the coming weeks.  It took me almost two hours to get home from work today, shower and then get to a birthday party.  Two hours up from an hour and twenty is too much.  And this whole delay thing is supposed to last for six weeks.

I actually almost yelled at an MTA worker today on the platform because they made the last stop at Willets Point - Shea Stadium instead of Main Street Flushing, my stop.  They said it was because that train was going back to the rail yard, but that another train was right behind it. Right behind it means like thirty seconds to a minute.  No.  This was five-ten minutes behind it.   That line was NOT running at full capacity, and they're full of shit if they think this will be any good for six weeks.

UGH.  I'm going to be so upset about this. :(

Fred Dalton Thompson ripped into Giuliani's record especially since Giiuliani tends to relate all of his policies with New York City, which makes sense since New York City is one of the largest cities in the world.  Giuliani responds by saying that Giuliani lived what Thompson could only do on television.

I can smell a dogfight out of this one.

I'm glad I'm a democrat. ;)
